HAZRA Park Durgotsab come up with “TANDAV” theme to celebrate the 80th Year

Kolkata, 15th Sep 2022: Year after year Hazra Park Durgotsab delights audiences by presenting innovative ideas. This Puja from South Kolkata has come up with an intriguing theme called “Tandav” this time. Hazra Park Durgotsab which turns 80 this year, is celebrating by presenting a theme that is related to the present situation of the world “Tandav”. It will be an actual record of the human experience with the theme and the ceremony of Durgotsab. The puja is situated in Hazra crossing (inside Jatin Das Park).

In the Hindu texts, the science in Tandav is per cosmology. This occurs continuously each day in the form of an unseen creature. The continuous cycle of creation and destruction is created by nuclear instability which occurs on different levels of the universe, and assists to maintain a healthy equilibrium. As per the Hindu texts, Tandav is an integral aspect of our existence that happens without our awareness.

The great energy waves in the sounds of the drum reach humans in waves. The universe is transformed into an energy source. The energy source transforms and the universe transforms into the reservoir of a single energy, which transforms into multiple dimensions. That’s Tandava. It’s not merely an event that occurs at a specific time, Tandav is actually an ongoing process in the universe that is usually seen through the eyes of God. In Hazra Park, our theme for this year’s Durga puja aims to show this power of existence. The work will serve as an everyday spectator to the artist’s artistic expression. We will show how Tandav is now an integral aspect of our lives and how the artist’s perception of Tandav is in different areas of society.

The media was interviewed by speaking to the media, Mr. Sayan Deb Chatterjee, Joint Secretary of the Hazra Park Durgotsab Committee said, “This year’s theme is to consider the ongoing nature of all the Universe. Its theme will be Tandav, which actually is a tangible representation of the human experience. The primary idea behind this theme revolves around Tandava which is an undefined time period however it is a constant process. In the view of the theories of creation violence is a constant event within the universe. the reservoirs that contain the destruction, as well as creation, are created in the nuclear instability that occurs across the universe. The puja began on the premises of Bhowanipore for a short time before moving into Hazra Park in 1945. Since the beginning, this puja has spoken out against the inability to touch.”

In the event of torrential rains that destroy vast areas of ground, rehab facilities appear as new residences for homeless people who have lost nearly everything, except for their unending determination to resist the chaotic nature’s frenzies. When the downpour continues to create destruction, it destroys the natural world and the lives of humans when thousands of trees are down rooted and laid on death to die. It destroys a whole human civilization, and with the ability to destroy an entire society with a touch of a button Mother nature is a symbol of an ancient battle between modern civilization and nature.

Modern technology and machines have enabled the human race to develop leaps and leaps and have left behind our ancient beliefs, traditions, and values. Despite the amazing technology and tools that our civilized society has in the present, time and time again Mother Nature has proven her dominance. This was exemplified by the recent incident, which saw the world fall victim to a micro-sized virus. With the threat of extinction growing, the human race stopped. Even with the most advanced technologies, the virus shook the very foundations of our existence and showed our vulnerability to natural whims. In a matter of minutes, the virus spread throughout the globe, affecting both the poor and rich as well as those aged and young by overcoming barriers created by man. The result of a culture of fierce individualism and the emphasis on work over everything other things The quick spread of the pandemic resulted in the destruction of many dreams and the loss of many loved relatives. In actuality, it was the Tandav of human history.

But, being human, we continued to fight with a hope of a better tomorrow building on our experience of the past. Perhaps, the pandemic was an invitation to examine our societal dreams, and build something that can better support humans in crisis. In the process of rebuilding for a better tomorrow, we realized that it is a constant process of rethinking and reworking around our mother that would drive humanity ahead. Just like the sea waves, which are in a never-ending process of rebuilding. Many consider Tandav as a destructive force. But, traversing the pages of human history, one can see that Tandav is being referred to as a special moment that initiates the change process when something new is being conceived while something is destroyed. Change is a part of life, as nothing is static for long. Change is necessary for life, and so, change is inevitable. So, one must embrace this aspect and go along with the ups and downs of life. Instead of losing our hearts, we should learn from our past. The puja organizers want the 2022 Durgotsab to become a place of great harmony, forgetting the pain of loss over the last three years. But all-around worship of the mother will be beneficial. For that purpose, Hazra Park Durgotsab Puja Committee is all geared up and preparing for Puja with great enthusiasm.

About Hazra Park Durgotsab: The Puja in Hazra Park has its own significance and pride. There was a time when Durga Puja was mainly done in palaces or houses of noble and high caste families. People of lower castes were not even allowed to enter these Pujas and give offerings to Goddesses. It was beyond imagination for these underprivileged people. Family Pujas slowly gave way to “Barowaari” or community ones but it still had a long way to become “Sarbojanin” or secular. The caste disposition of those days considered the Harijans / Mahtars to be unclean since they were employed by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation to clean open pit latrines and the city’s sewage system and therefore were restricted to enter Puja Pandals.

This is when this Puja started in 1942 with the support of Calcutta Municipal Corporation under the guidance of the then Mayor Sri C.R. Das and CEO Sri Subhas Chandra Bose. This Puja was open to the common masses, underprivileged, backward classes, and Harijans. Earlier, this Puja was held at Bhowanipore which shifted to Hazra Park in 1945. People from backward classes could participate freely in the Puja, which still continues today. Even today, as a tradition, about 1000 Harijans are seated and personally served with Bhog and Prasad by the committee members. This is a symbol of respect for the generations who have kept the city clean for years. It is also a powerful statement that despite one’s birth, every man is created equal and should be treated same.
