Patients above 80 get new life with MICS by Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata

Kolata, 21st Sep 2022:  Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals Kolkata gave a new lease of life to three people above eighty by performing Minimally Painful Cardiac Surgery (MICS). MICS is a new approach to heart surgery, which has a number of advantages. Instead of cutting 8 to 10 inches for traditional open heart surgery, this surgery only requires 1.5 to 3 inches. MICS is less painful and almost scarless. Recovery after this surgery is quick. Bypass heart surgery should be avoided, as this major surgery does not go very smoothly, but both patients underwent multi-vessel grafting via MICS and both started walking within two days. This is unthinkable if cardiac surgery is done in the normal route On this occasion Dr. Sushan Mukhopadhyay, Director, Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgeon, Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals said “Apollo doctors with a track record of performing more than 4000 MICS perform minimally invasive cardiac surgery, trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) through MICS. He recovered completely in 48 hours. Further check-ups showed significant improvement in his heart function and he is leading a normal life.” Previously, open surgery was the only solution for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair or replacement, heart hole closure, etc.  Heart attacks account for 14.5% of all deaths in India and MICS has emerged as a solution for patients with CABG or Keyhole Bypass Coronary Artery Disease. Doubts about the safety of these surgeries have been dispelled. If MICS were introduced as a routine procedure everywhere, people would be more inclined to MICS bypass than angioplasty, and the 14.5% figure would certainly change. The routine multi-vessel bypass will significantly reduce the chance of death. MICS has several additional advantages over traditional open heart surgery: • No bones are cut. • Bleeding is negligible, resulting in no need for blood transfusion. There is also no possibility of blood-borne diseases. • Decreases the amount of infection in the lungs after injury or surgery. So this surgery is ideal for diabetic patients or patients with a weak immune system • The incision made is very small, only 2-3 inches. As a result, it becomes impossible to understand that heart surgery has taken place.
